How can I place a hold?

Patrons may place holds in three ways.

  • Place a hold through PrairieCat using your Odell Public Library card. You will need your Odell Public Library barcode and pin number. This is the quickest and most reliable method of placing hold.
  • Call Odell at 815-772-7323. Please leave a detailed message including your name, title(s) requested, and a contact phone number so we can follow up with you.
  • Email us at ask.odell.library@gmail.com. Please be as detailed as possible with your requests and be sure to include your name and phone number so we can follow up with you.

Can I check out items from other libraries?

Yes! At this time, our interlibrary loan system has resumed. Materials typically take 1-2 weeks to arrive.

Is there a limit on the number of items I can check out?

We have not set a limit on the number of items a patron may check out, but may revise our procedures as necessary.

I want to check out books, but I usually browse for materials. Can someone help me select something to read?

Yes! If you’re not sure what to read, call us at 815-772-7323 or email ask.odell.library@gmail.com and request reader’s advisory. Please tell us which authors you usually enjoy or even what to steer clear of. Maybe there’s a certain topic you’re interested in or a favorite genre. Give us as many details as possible and we will gather a selection of materials to try. This service is available for adults and children alike!

**Updated to add that Odell is now open by appointment. Call 815-772-7323 to schedule a time to come in. Appointments are limited and hours are subject to change.

Can I still get a library card even though the library is closed?

Yes! Fill out our online library card application and we will get you started. A staff member will contact you once your card is ready to pick up. Staff will need to verify identity of all patron applicants or their parent/guardians. Please be prepared to show a valid photo ID at pick up. Call 815-772-7323 or email odell.library@gmail.com with any questions.

I turned in my materials. Why do they still show on my account?

All returned items are quarantined for a minimum of 3 days. After 3 days, staff will check in the items. No late fines will accrue during this period.

When will my materials be due?

Library materials are now due the usual 2 weeks after checkout. You may renew materials for an additional 2 weeks.

How are staff taking precautions to ensure safe transactions?

The health and safety of library staff and library patrons is our number one priority. As such, all returned materials are placed in quarantine for a minimum of three days. Staff members must wear a mask at all times, practice frequent handwashing following CDC guidelines, regularly sanitize high-touch areas, and maintain a 6 foot distance from employees and patrons whenever possible.

As Odell opens back up to the public, EVERYONE ENTERING THE BUILDING MUST WEAR A MASK OR CLOTH COVERING. T

Can I put my CDs/DVDs in the book drop?

Yes. At this time, ALL materials will be accepted in the book drop. If you are worried about damaging the material, please hang on to it (no fines will accrue) or if you must return it, wrap it in bubble wrap or a even a plastic bag. The book drop is emptied daily.

I tried calling the library, but I keep getting a busy signal.

The library currently only has one phone line. Please try again at another time or consider emailing us at ask.odell.library@gmail.com.

When will the library open?

Odell will open for certain services including browsing and computer use BY APPOINTMENT ONLY beginning Monday, July 20th.

What if I can’t or don’t want to wear a mask?
